About NHS Take Home Calculator

An independent website that works out what NHS staff actually take home — built because generic salary calculators get NHS pay wrong: they miss the pension tiers, the Scottish tax bands, the 36-hour Scottish week and the way part-time pay really behaves.

What this site does

NHS Take Home Calculator covers Agenda for Change pay for England and Scotland on the official 2026/27 scales: take-home pay for every band and step, plus dedicated calculators for pension, maternity pay, sick pay, overtime and unsocial hours, annual leave and part-time pay. Every calculator runs entirely in your browser — there are no accounts and nothing you enter is sent anywhere.

Wales 2026/27 scales are covered on the pay bands hub and the Band 5, 6 and 7 pages. Northern Ireland’s 2026/27 award has not been implemented, so its in-force 2025/26 scales are shown, clearly labelled and date-stamped. We would rather show a nation’s real position than publish an award that has not actually been paid.

Who runs it

The site is researched, built and maintained by an independent publisher. It is not a company product, it is not affiliated with the NHS, NHS Employers, NHSBSA, SPPA or HMRC, and it carries no NHS branding. The publisher's background is in search and publishing rather than payroll — which is exactly why every figure on the site is taken from the official documents listed below and checked the way the next section describes, instead of relying on anyone's memory of how NHS pay works.

How figures are checked

Five rules govern every number on this site:

1. Official sources only. Pay scales come from NHS Employers and the Scottish Government's pay circulars; pension tiers from NHSBSA and the SPPA; tax and National Insurance from GOV.UK. Competitor sites are never a source.

2. Figures are generated, not typed. Every take-home number is produced by the site's calculator engine from those official scales, and the engine is tested against worked examples to the penny before any page ships.

3. Assumptions are printed. Each page states what its numbers assume — the standard tax code, the pension tier basis, the nation — next to the figures themselves.

4. Dates are shown. Every page carries the month its figures were last checked at the top, a change log at the bottom, and the date of the next scheduled check.

5. April is a full re-check. When each year's pay award and uprating lands, every scale, tier and rate on the site is re-verified against the new official documents. The full method is set out on the how we calculate page.

Contact

Corrections, questions and suggestions are genuinely welcome — a calculator site is only worth anything if its figures are right, and we would rather be told about an error than leave one standing. Email hello@nhstakehomecalculator.co.uk.

Please don't send personal payroll details. For your own pay, your trust or health board's payroll team is authoritative, and this site's estimates never override your payslip.
